Chris Ferguson

Chris Ferguson began to focus on the online poker industry back in 2002. He gathered a poker team together, which was to consist of people who could design and develop a poker platform, as well as ambassadors for their shared online poker room entitled Fulltilt Poker. But how did it all start?

In High School Chris earned an average of $2 an hour by playing poker with his friends at the week-ends. They all went to Las Vegas a few times to play poker. Out of 22 visits to Las Vegas (he lived only 300 miles from the city) Chris only went in the red twice. He had long had a talent for poker.

In 1989, Chris discovered the IRC Poker Network, where you played poker against one another via a text-based chat room. There was no money involved and it was just your ego that was nurtured here when winning against others. Chris set himself some goals. He should never lose all his money, even if it was just “fun money”, and he should be number 1 on the IRC Poker Network's leaderboard. Both goals were achieved and Chris was actually number 1 or 2 for a number of years at the start of the 1990s, the period when he played the most.

In 1994, Chris decided to focus on poker and on using his insight into the theory of playing to make money. He focused exclusively on tournament poker. He started by playing small tournaments in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. He did not want to compromise his finances and therefore did not want to take part in the World Series of Poker before 1995. In 1996, he won a satellite tournament and gained access to the Main Event at WSOP, which he has been a permanent participant of ever since. In the 3 years that followed, he was in the money 12 times and even made the final table 7 times. His best position was never higher than fourth place.

Until the year 2000 – which was Chris Ferguson’s breakthrough year, as this was the year he won the ”Main Event - No limit Texas Hold’em”.

Education: Chris Ferguson finished his PhD in computer science from UCLA in 1999. He was 36 at the time and had spent approx. 18 years at the university.
