Sports Olympics Games

It is good to know that once in a while, aside from petty misunderstandings of different nations, there is still something that would bind the world into one. Political rivalries are set aside, economic competitions are forgotten and the attempts for world invasion are long buried from the past. For it is excellent to realize that once in a while, different nations go together for one goal, one objective, one move and one mission. Different representatives of different countries may have the chance to showcase what they’ve got in their sport expertise. Everyone who would take the challenge to embody their nations would have the opportunity to bring honor and add spice to his/her own country.

It is good to believe that during World Sports Olympics, the world is becoming one. There would be competitions from where the candidates would exert their best effort to win the gold, but the contest is just like a friendly competition from where the winner would not be able to be rewarded a political position or even a nation, just an honor and the prestige of bringing home the bacon, whether it is gold, silver or bronze.

Olympic games is giving thousand of athletes the chance to meet up together in an international sporting event which is also tagged as the world’s most important sports competition that was held every four years. The Olympic Games is divided into Summer and Winter Olympics alternately during every four years but apart for two years. Among the innovations and development are the evolutions of Paralympics Games especially dedicated to the athletes with disabilities but still capable of competing and the Youth Olympic Games which is intentionally designed for the younger athletes with the expertise on the sports they are engaged. The enhancement of this creation was based and inspired from the Ancient Olympic Games that occurred during the 8th Century BC to the 4th Century AD at Olympia Greece.

This Ancient Olympic Games are usually holding its events at the Sanctuary of Zeus in Greece. The games including both sports games and combat games are played and competed by several athletes representing their own city or state or kingdom. And during this time, participating kingdoms set aside their issues and conflicts until the Olympic Games are finished and most of the time, this event helped their leaders to settle whatever problems they might have. It s truly important to practice the treaty of peace during the Olympic games as this could be the reason of disqualification of the kingdom or the nation that would not follow the Olympic Peace as what they call it. And it was believed until now that this was the most important product of the event, the World Peace which up to now is quite difficult to achieve. Since then, updates and modifications are engaged to develop more rules, regulations and processes to be more applicable to many athletes all over the globe and to cater more number of sportsmen to participate on every event of the Olympic Games.

1. The IOC (International Olympic Committee)!

In every event that is holding a competition even the simplest contest which would have to have a winner, or a decision for that matter would be needing a body of judges or members of the panel that would take in charge of all the deciding factor in regards of the events. Criteria for judging, processes of the events, rules and regulations and many others that would have an impact on the said event are decided by the authorities who also had the power to organized and be called the founder of that event. In the instance of the Olympic Games, it is the International Olympic Committee or the IOC has the power to manipulate all the written legalities of every single details of the event. The IOC is the governing body of all the movements in accordance with all the facts related to the Olympic Games for that matter. There are Movements and Charters that are responsible in defining all the structures with regards to the Olympic and these are all administered and supervised by the authorities and functioning personalities of the IOC.

By the way, IOC was founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin on 1894. And up to the present to its 121st IOC session for the incoming 2016 Summer Olympics, the IOC is still the deciding factor on all of the structures and functions of the event. The IOC as dreamt by its founder Coubertin has always been aware of the effects and consequences that the economic and political mirage may diverge to any of the structures of the Olympic Games. Technological improvements in the process of supervising the events are given priorities and highlights by the IOC, one very significant instance is the transformation of the Olympic Games from Pure amateurisms to allowing some professional athletes to participate in some selected sports and the evolution of the events as shown in some reputable media to garner sponsorships and mass media promotions. The commercialization of the Olympic Games had brought many innovations in the awarding of the winners but mostly the results of these transformations are positive.

As mentioned awhile ago, IOC had Movements and Charters that help governed to construct structures and functions of the events, and these include International Sports Federations or the (IFs) and National Olympic Committees or the (NOCs) as the deciding factors. Aside from IF’s and NOCs, IOC is also forming Organizing Committee for each sports that are included in the event. This organizing committee is in charge of the schedules and chronology of the athletes to be placed to a particular schedule. This Olympic Movement takes in a huge count of national and international activity groups and coalitions, distinguished media alliances, as well as sportsmen, sports authorities like judges and every other personality and foundation that accept the consentient to stand for by the rules of the Olympic Charter. As the stem group of the Olympic Movement, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would take the responsibilities for choosing the host city, administering the arrangement of the Olympic Games, developing and organizing the sports program, and bargaining supports from different enterprises and media buying for broadcasting purposes. And again, as mentioned before, these three major umbrellas of the IOC have their respective responsibilities and tasks that would definitely help process the event more smoothly and flawlessly.

International Federations or IFs is responsible in supervising the sports proper in international level. For now, there are 35 IFs existing that the IOC authorized and this includes the International Federation of Association Football and the likes. The National Olympic Committees or the NOCs are responsible in representing and regulating every sports program within the country. For now, there are 205 NOC’s that are authorized by the IOC like the United States Olympic Committee or the USOC from which happened to be the NOC of the United States. And lastly, the Organizing Committees for the Olympic Games or the OCOGs’ responsibilities are the planning, outlining the programs and putting them in action during the event proper of the Olympic Games. The existence of OCOGs is just temporary as they would be dissolved after each of their responsibilities is accomplished. The IOC was also in charge in the selection of the host city where the events would take place.

And the host city would be chosen by bidding which will be launched by the IOC themselves. And the bidding process includes the submission of the application to IOC plus the forms that the bidding country would have to fill up. The IOC would select a shortlist of finalist among the submitting countries and then from there, considering some criteria, the members of the panel of board of judges who are mostly members of the IOC would choose the final host city.

The IOC is also responsible in determining the programs of the Olympic which encompass the sports to be included on the Olympic Games, their corresponding athletes to play the sports whom represent their countries, the symbols, the logos, the torch, the title of every event, 2016 Summer Olympic Games for example would be tagged as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, the opening and the closing ceremonies and their programs, and most especially, the selection of the jurors and judges for every sport that would be contested during the Sport Olympic.

Part of the structure as provided by the IOC would be the awarding ceremony from where among the almost 14,000 participants from different countries who compete for Summer and Winter Olympic Games, only three athletes from almost 40 different sports on its almost 450 events would be given the prestige of standing on the stadium of honours, the first who would be rewarded the Olympic Gold Medal, the second who would be given the Olympic Silver Medal and the third who would be awarded the Olympic Bronze Medal and some consolation prizes are given to some of the finalists for every sports.

The IOC is actually having just a small amount to cater all the necessary things in regards with the Olympic Games but that was during the beginning of the year of the event, it is noticeable on the beginning of the foundation of the IOC up to the first half of the 20th century. Any links to commercialization during that time were not permitted by the in-time President of the IOC Avery Brundage, which was 1952 to 1972. The IOC president during that time believed that the connection of the Olympic games should not in any way be linked to any corporation with the interest of commercialization, therefore the IOC during those period is the mere responsible in negotiating with the sponsors for their own logo to be used and not any other corporate connections. When Brundage gave up the position, he left the organization with a significant budget, but after a few years, it had multiplied to as high as 20 times and this is because IOC opens their door to corporate sponsorship and the rights to broadcast the event to television networks.

2. The Pioneer, the first, the premier!

It was 1896 when IOC started to organize Olympic Games and the very first under their supervision was the 1896 games. It was hosted by Athens, Greece and participated by 241 sportsmen from different 14 countries. The 43 events from almost 25 sports were competed accordingly by the rules and regulations formed and formulated by the members of the IOC. The 1896 Olympic Games was funded by the trust funds donated by a certain Zappas who also had left the Greek authorities significant amount to be used for the future Olympic Games. There are also some generous personalities who had donated certain amounts to be used for the renovations of the venues to be used for the games.

The government from Greece also had financed some important matters but needed to reimburse them from the amount that would be taken from the sales of the tickets and some souvenirs which will be sold during the game proper. The outcome of the first Olympic Games was very favorable and the responses of the public and the Greek officials were also affirmative making them very enthusiastic in hosting another Olympic Games in Athens. But IOC had decided that Olympic Games should be hosted by different nations around the Globe for the promotion and becoming the Olympic Games be accepted globally. And so, the second Olympic Games were hosted by Paris, Europe. It was truly known that the 1896 Olympic Games were very successful in terms of outcome and the smoothness of the processes and results. But the following events were not as successful as the 1896 event, the Paris Exposition 1900 from where the second Olympic Games were held and the third one which was held at World’s Fair St. Louis were both resulted to so so and not as good as the first one.

The Paris Olympic Games did not have their stadium from where a lot of audience can watch the game proper and so it made the public criticize the host country, while the St Louis Olympic Games was joined by nearly 700 athletes, it was also questioned because 85 % of the participants were all from the United States. Both resulted to the stagnation and the popularity gained during the first Olympic was deteriorated. Though the Paris Olympic was also remembered and included to be part of the Olympic history because for the very first time, lady athletes were allowed to compete, this did not suffice the fact that both the Paris and St. Louis Olympics were questioned tremendously. The IOC was so disappointed with the results of the two following Olympic Games. And so this disappointment was about to be seized as the next Olympic tagged as 1906 Intercalated Games though not officially endorsed by IOC were of as successful as the first one because it was able to generate tremendous public interest, 100% more participants and international popularity. And so, the Greatness of the Olympic Games had begun.

3. The Youth Olympic Games!

The popularity of the Olympic Games had made the IOC decided to create a more comprehensive innovations in the field of sports, the Winter Olympic for instance had added winter sports from which were not possible to do it during the Summer Olympic Games. Another is the Paralympics Games which is especially designed for the athletes with disabilities but still able to excel on sports. And the most relevant addition to the traditional Sports Games would be the Youth Olympic Games. It was in 2010 when the event was complemented by the games dedicated to the youth. Athletes between 14 to 18 years of age are now qualified to compete and participate in this kind of endeavor. It was envisioned by the IOC leader Jacques Rogge and presented to the 119th IOC Congressional session for the approval. Instead of doing nothing or wasting their time to unnecessary and unfavorable hobbies like drugs and so much bad habits, Rogge thought of something that would reroute the Youth to a more meaningful and considerable time of their lives. Majority of the members of the IOC found the suggestion very innovative and useful to cater a broader audience and participants for the Olympic and so the Youth Olympic Games was approved. It was Singapore that hosted the very first Youth Olympic Games from the 14th to the 26th of August of 2010, relatively shorter that the normal Olympic Sports Games. It comprises the Youth Winter Games which would last up to nine days and the Youth Summer Olympic games would last up to twelve days, still shorter that the traditional Olympic Games for that matter. There will be no difference from the sports that would be the subject of competitions but there are variations made to cater the younger athletes. Around 3,500 Youth sportsmen and 875 authorities to join the Summer Youth Games, and 970 players and 580 staffs at the Winter Youth Games were allowed by the IOC for the initial offering of the Youth Olympic Games.

4. The Host Cities!

Well, every city all over the globe is dreaming to become the host of the most prestigious sports events of the world, but it is not as easy as it gets because there are many factors of considerations and a lot of criteria are set before a city can host the event. And despite of these many requirements, many are still interested in hosting the event. Why? We will discuss later in a separate topic.

The city that would be given the chance to host the Olympic Games is usually selected from seven up to eight years before the event occurred. The IOC is in charge of the selection and the process may take up to two years. A form of questionnaire would be given to the applicant cities and would comply with the requirements set by IOC. From these applicants, IOC would select probable candidates and would require a more comprehensive and detailed proposal of the programs that would be necessary for the Olympic Games.

IOC representatives would also make a visit to the candidate cities for ocular trips. They would make an interview with the local members of the government, inspect the probable venues and look into other possibilities that may occur. Once the reports are made, IOC officials would present those documents to their final session. All of the IOC officials and staff would have to vote for the final city that would host the Olympic Games. And once the city was selected, the bidding committee together with the country’s NOC would sign a “Host City Contract” with the IOC and this would be the signal that the city signed the contract would be the official host of the incoming Olympic Games.

Among many candidates like Chicago of the United States, Madrid of Spain and Tokyo of Japan, 2016 Summer Olympic Games which will be held from the 5th of August to the 21st of August 2016 would be hosted by none other than Rio de Janeiro Brazil. It was announced during the 121st session of the IOC on the 2nd of October 2009 in Copenhagen Denmark. For instance, the participants of the 1896 Summer Olympics were 241 athletes who represented 14 nations all over the globe while 2012 Summer Olympics had around 10,500 athletes to compete in different sports events who would represent 204 nations all over the globe. Aside from the participants, the number of sports to be contested also swelled of very hugely. Other difference includes the permission of the colonies to compete as an independent entry such as Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Hong Kong. They are competitors representing as separate nations despite being geographically part of another country.

6. Sports, disciplines and events!

The sports included in the Olympic Games are programmed by the IF or the International Sports Federations which were recognized by the IOC.
